 Update on Robert Harrison (6/2/10)

Here is an update from Robert's wife Aimee -

It has been awhile since I let ya all know how things are going. I guess no news is good news. His liver is a keeper and he is slowly recovering. He has gained about 10 pounds and looks and feels a lot better... only 40 pounds to go. We are still hoping his anti-rejection meds will stabilize soon so he can come home for good. I guess it is a specialized blood test that not many labs or hospitals do so that is why he has to go there. He is down to 1 doctor visit a week and is only seeing the liver specialists and not seeing the transplant team anymore. He got his staples out a week ago and his wound is healing and will soon be a scar to remember. He can start driving now as soon as he feels up to abrupt stops and is completely off of his pain meds. That should be soon since he is starting to wean off of them now but not sure about the sudden stops yet! Still can only be an hour away from the hospital. As time goes on, the distance allowed away from the hospital should increase and the blood work and doctor visits should decrease. Is not cleared to go back to work for at least 6 more weeks.  We can’t wait for life to get back to normal. We know we still have a ways to go but there is finally an end in sight.

Thank you all for your continued support!

Update on Robert Harrison (5/15/10)

Here is an update from Robert's wife Aimee -

Robert got to come home for a visit for the first time since March. I picked him up on Thursday afternoon and brought him back on Saturday around 6PM.  He will try and come weekly on Thursday afternoons until Saturday evening until he can come home for good. He still has to go to the hospital 4 times a week because his anti rejection meds aren’t regulated yet. We pray that in a couple more weeks, he can come home for good and just to go to Stanford once a week for clinic appointments and can have blood work done in Pleasanton. He is recovering and the sooner he does what the docs want him too(eating right, walking 4 times a day(should be up to 35 minutes each time, and stop napping, messes up his sleep cycle at night) the faster he will heal, the better he will feel, and the faster he will gain weight and muscle back. So in other words, no babying him! I had him out to baseball games on Saturday. Zak was umpiring and then went to 80 Gold game in Danville and got to watch a bunch of his former ball players again.

Update on Robert Harrison (5/6/10)

Here is an update from Robert's wife Aimee -

Robert has moved out of the hospital and back to the apartment with his mother. If all goes well, he should be able to come home in 6-8 weeks. He is doing well. He is more sore (the incision site) than last time but surgeon said that was to be expected. Feel free to visit if you can. FYI: He is skin and bones, lost all his muscle…from 185 to 130… it is hard for us to see him this way and I didn’t want any surprises for you. He has a lot of work to do to get himself healthy again but with lots of good food and exercise, the good news is that it is possible for him to have a healthy and normal life post transplant.

Update on Robert Harrison (5/4/10)

Here is an update from Robert's wife Aimee -

Robert’s liver seems to be working well. His numbers look good and they let him have clear liquid and some bread today (his insides seem to stay asleep longer this time). Hopefully by tonight or tomorrow they will have him on a regular diet. He is extremely thin and weak but seems to feel much better this time around. He doesn’t have to learn how to move this time for instance. He learned how get up with the last transplant. He does have blood clots in his neck from the last surgery which they can now treat with blood thinners since none of us plan on another surgery. It is a nasty med. He will have to give himself shots in the belly when he leaves the hospital for a few days until the oral thinners start to build up and work. But if that is the worst of it, praise God. They are talking about sending him to the campus apartments on Thursday….so we will see and I will keep you posted.

I am ever grateful for all love, prayers, and support.

Robert has been moved out of ICU, and is now recoverying in Room E330.

Update on Robert Harrison (4/13/10)

Hello All,
Robert’s new liver isn’t working right and they will list him on the liver transplant list again. He will be listed at a 40 and ranked 1st on the list. Prayerfully a liver comes in fast…

He is at a 40 so that is #1 on the list and the spot to be. Prayerfully, he won’t have to wait another 2 weeks or more. They are talking about moving him to the on campus apartment to wait for the liver in a few days, but we are hoping they do not do that. It feels much “safer” to have him in the hospital.

Please keep the Harrison family in your thoughts and prayers.  Others ways to assist the family - meals, hospital visits to Robert, and fiancial assistance as they go through this tough time.

Update on Robert Harrison (3/29/10)

Hello All,

UNOS moved Robert up to a score of 35. That makes him #1 on Stanford’s list for his blood type and either 1 or 2 for the area for a liver. Someone can still come in at a higher number and bump his spot but we are praying that doesn’t happen. So, he can get a liver today, next week, or a month or two. We just won’t know until it happens. He will stay in the hospital until he gets a liver and recovers from transplant surgery. We have a long road ahead of us still but at least that liver is in the near future. I will keep you updated.

Thank you so much for all of your continued support. I can’t put it into words what it means to all of us.

Aimee

Robert Harrison, the Manager of the 2009 Major D-Backs

Robert has been struggling with some health issues over the last 6 months.  In the fall, he was taken to the hospital and has been in and out ever since.  He is on a donor list for a liver transplant.  Here is a summary about his condition:

He has HHT (Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia) but thankfully only in his liver. Because of this his liver is failing and his heart is pumping 3 times (18L vs. 6L) as much blood per minute as a healthy heart. The doctors tell us his heart is running a marathon 24/7 at rest. To fix it, he needs a new liver. He will be put on liver transplant list.

Robert Harrison is back in the hospital as of March 19th

The latest news is that he has a bacterial infection in his blood that got there because a portion of his liver is dying. He is on antibiotics. His infection is slowly getting better. But his “yellow “is barely getting better which has to do with liver function. I talked with the doctors today and they told me that he needs to stay in the hospital, hopefully until he gets a liver. He is too sick to go home and until he is better, he can’t. How can you get better if your liver is dying? Antibiotics won’t heal the liver. Because they discovered the dying tissue in his liver, they are going to appeal to UNOS on Friday morning again and hope that they will move up his number again. Still really don’t know much but I feel like this will get him a liver faster even though it is so hard not to have him home. Thanks for all of your support!
